Podiatry and Biomechanics
Podiatrists specialise in the study of the body’s movements during standing, walking and running, and the effects that these movements have on the skeletal system.
The human foot is designed to function on soft surfaces, but as a result of how human society has developed, we now spend every day walking on hard, flat surfaces. This creates adaptive changes in human mechanics and causes long-term wear and tear to our feet, knees and backs.
Foot and ankle pain can be caused by a biomechanical dysfunction creating abnormal gait or walking patterns due to structural or muscular imbalances, the primary cause of which may not just be at foot or ankle level, but as a consequence of mechanical problems, be associated with the leg, knee, hip or lower back.
Orthotics
People’s feet vary in size, shape and function. Examination of the underlying changes that may have contributed to their symptoms are addressed during a biomechanical assessment of both the upper and lower limbs (which may involve video gait analysis); then, if required, functionally-corrective prescriptive shoe inserts, or orthotics, are fabricated from a Plaster of Paris cast impression of their feet.
Orthotics re-align feet and ankles to help correct and control body posture to reduce symptoms, and can provide relief to some of the following common complaints:
- Heel Pain (e.g. plantar fasciitis)
- Achilles tendonitis
- Flat feet
- Knee pain
- Low back pain
Jonathan adopts a multidisciplinary approach to his practice, working closely with the physiotherapists at The Valley Clinic in Ilkley. This dovetail of patient treatment/management greatly enhances successful outcomes for patients.
For those patients who present with the following painful conditions that require surgical intervention:
- Bunions (Hallux valgus)
- Hallux limitus/rigidus (arthritis of big toe joint)
- Hammer, Claw toes
- Neuromas
- Ganglions, Cysts, Bursae, Verrucae
Jonathan also provides a surgical foot triage clinic where patients, if required, can be referred to Andy Naismith at The Lawrence Clinic in Pudsey for consultation.
